Hey, You.

Remember the last time you overdid it? You know…went too far?

(Psst: If you’re like most of us humans doing human stuff, I’m guessing it wasn’t the first time.)

Perhaps it was one more Christmas cookie…or one more glass of eggnog.

Or maybe your thing isn’t overdoing it with food…but with another substance or action. (How’s that Boxing Day shopping cart looking?)

Or, just maybe, your thing isn’t “overdoing” anything…but under-doing in the form of deprivation and restriction. (Raises hand.)

Whatever your fix, I’m guessing the obsessing, act, and aftermath took a whole lot of energy.

I’m also guessing it came with a hefty dose of guilt, shame, embarrassment, regret, and pain.

Perhaps, if the pain was bad enough, you even declared: “I AM NEVER DOING THAT AGAIN.”

But then…

You did it again.

And the same thing happened that always happens — that WILL always happen.

It couldn’t possibly be otherwise: The cycle is very painful…and very predictable. The outcome reinforces reoccurrence.

So why do we do it? And how do we stop?

Well, in shorthand, some part of us is wounded.

Some part of us is trying to help us feel better, keep us safe, and get very valid needs met.

That part of us is just going about it wrong. In fact, it’s going about it in a way that’s the opposite of helpful.

This does NOT make you broken or bad. It makes you human. (Welcome! Glad you could join us!)

Oh, and there’s good news.

This being human stuff also means you 100 percent have the capacity to step out of your painful, predictable, unhelpful cycle…and do something different.

Over the next few days, I’ll be sharing a couple tips, tools, and practices that worked for me, when I decided “I’M NEVER DOING THAT AGAIN.”

I’ll also be telling you more about my Body as Ally: Recovery Kit.

It’s an offering sourced from my personal recovery…and my work helping others break “bad cycles” on repeat.
